On September 16, 2007 I will be doing the Nautica Malibu Triathlon in memory of my dad, Grant Burns, as part of The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Team In Training program. In honor of my dad and his love of cycling, I will be riding his bike for the 18 mile cycling portion. My personal goal is to raise $3,000 to support the society's mission to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives. http://www.active.com/donate/tntgla/TriBeckieTri

Which event should I choose...

My foot seems to be healing slowly but surely. I have been trying to get in the pool as much as possible to loosen up my ankle and get some exercise in. Now as my recovery is under way and I know I cannot catch up in time to be ready for the Maui Half Marathon, I need to think about what event I should do instead. Team In Training has the Arizona Rock 'N' Roll Marathon and Half Marathon scheduled for its next season. It sounds fun, with a band playing at every mile of the course. This all takes place January 15, 2006 in Phoenix/Scottsdale area. I think this will be my event. I go to the podiatrist next Tuesday and will get my orthotics (specially made inserts for my shoes) to help protect those bones in the future. I still may not be able to train on hard ground until 2 more weeks after that. We'll see what he says. Let's hope for the best!

To every up there is a down...

To every up there is a down...
and to every down there is an up!

I want to thank all of you again who made a donation to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society on behalf of my Team in Training half marathon experience. I wanted to give you an update on my fundraising and training.

The good news...I am about $1,500 over my minimum fundraising goal and checks keep rolling in! Wow! That means 100% of this will go directly to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

The bad news...about 3 weeks ago after a 5 mile training session, my foot started hurting really bad. I ended up with a broken bone in the ball of my left foot and a big purple cast! The cast is now off and I am slowly recovering. I will not be able to train on hard ground for another month, which means I cannot do the Maui half marathon in September.

The good news again...I will be able to roll my fundraising over to another event at a later time when I have fully recovered. I am disappointed I cannot go to Maui and that I have been stuck with a broken foot for the summer, but I am sure whatever event I do, it will be a worthwhile experience!
